Once,
people went skiing in the winter - it was very simple,
with little variation and not as much chance of injury
now, it's all about winter sports.
There
used to be little choice in what you could do on winter
holidays, however nowdays there are all sorts of different
activities that you can do: Glacier skiing, ski acrobatics,
Heli-skiing, snow carting, snowmobile racing, husky
sled driving, snowboarding, parapente and even zorbing.
However
exciting these activities may be, insurers do not do
exciting as it invariably means risk. Hence if you read
the small print of your policy it will be full of exclusions.
The
biggest concern over where insurers stop short is off-piste
activity. Now days technology has help ski resorts make
the off piste areas safer and this encourages skiers
and winter sports enthusiasts to venture off piste more
and more.
The
risks arise where people who have got free travel insurance
with their credit card or house insurance and think
this covers them for everything. But these policies
are invariably very basic and at the very most cover
the bare minimum of winter sports. Which is why these
types of free offer are generally not worth relying
on and a dedicated travel insurance policy should be
taken out if you are intending to do any winter sports.
Snowboarders
are one and a half times more likely to injure themselves
than skiers, according to industry figures. Statistics
show that in an average group of skiers, one in a group
of 30 beginners will sustain a serious injury with knee
ligament damage the most common injury.
Considering
that repair of a ligament can cost £10,000 in
Europe and that is just the hospital fees on top of
that add mountain rescue, repatriation, physiotherapy,
it is troubling that, according to industry figures,
one in seven winter holidaymakers is uninsured. In America
the cost of a similar injury could be 4 times greater.
Put
another way, 170,000 people are injured and need treatment
every winter in the French Alps alone. One in 10 accidents
results from collision with another person.
Considering
travel insurance can cost less than £10 there
is no reason to take the risk View
